The Sad Odyssey of Kobe Bryant

Kobe in tears after a series-ending loss in the 2003 playoffs.

It's been reported that Kobe used to drive to UCLA at night and look at the students walking around campus, wondering what his life would've been like had he decided on a different path at 18.

It's been reported that Kobe, on road trips, remains in his hotel room while his teammates go sightseeing or check out the city's nightlife.

It's been reported that Kobe doesn't have many friends on the Lakers or around the league. And that, on the team bus, he sits in the back and chooses not to engage in dialogue with other Laker players or staff.

It's been reported that after his marriage to Vanessa Laine, Kobe and his father stopped talking for 2 years.

It's been reported that the seats Kobe bought for his parents remained empty during the 3 games the Lakers played against the 76ers in Philadelphia (his hometown) in the 2001 Finals. Kobe averaged 25 points and 6 assists in the series, helping his team to a title.

Kobe's father didn't attend the 2002 All-Star game in Philadelphia in which Kobe won the MVP.

Kobe told an LA Times reporter that he was deeply hurt by his father's absence in both instances.

It's been reported that Kobe contacted a divorce lawyer (months before his sexual encounter in Colorado) in the spring of 2003, prompting his wife into an emotional tailspin which landed her in the hospital on advanced life support.

It's been reported that Kobe told people in the media, not long after he wedded, "he wouldn't have to be lonely anymore."
